That's a good idea! We've thought about doing a rain chain down from the porch overhang, but the downspout in the photo is from the second floor, so it might be too high up to do that from. But there's something there for sure ;) Thanks!

I had a few folks ask me about this when I posted it elsewhere, and it's a great question! In theory you totally could, as coir is a natural fiber (it's made from coconut husks) but I was worried about the longevity of using just a laser burned image. With a lot of foot traffic, I suspected that the burned fibers would just rub off and obscure the details of the image. I'm definitely open to trying it at some point though!

Hey Penelopy! In general, yes you are absolutely right – you should never laser etch or cut anything that you're unsure what it's made of. These mats are almost alway made of a natural coir fiber though, which comes from coconut husks so it's safe to etch if you wanted; I just worried the image would rub off with burned fibers alone. :)
