From what I read this unit actually does use fairly decent components and people have had relatively little issues with their warranty (which is 5 year / 7 year compressor). That said, if it lasts another 10 months (which I have no doubt it will), then it'll be doing better than our traditional main home unit which is "name brand" and has basically had 2/3 of its parts replaced already by the installers.

It's mostly a matter of the top being able to support the weight of the 35 pound vise. My bench top is roughly 3-1/4" thick (~82mm). So 1/3 of that might be a little thin. Depending on how you want to use the vise you could also get a smaller and lighter "front" vise and still mount it on the end.

I was hoping the 20mm rod and bearing would be enough. With the drawer liner on the chop it is for most operations. The wedge I added just to see how well it worked (it actually works great) and it produces about as more force as you could ever need. People also use a crisscross or St. Peters Cross and those seem to work pretty well also.

谢谢!I really like the poplar so far. That's a great tip on the Titebond mixture to seal the ends. I should have done a test with a few boards to see how much it was actually needed when air-drying, but since the boards were short to begin with (and the attic gets pretty hot), I didn't want to lose any to checking.

Yeah, I wasn't sure if it was "cheating" to use Poplar, but it was certainly easy to split and work with. I'll be testing out some chalk paint recipes on it shortly.

No, it just dulled it. It makes a pretty noticeable high-pitched sound, so I backed off immediately when I hit it. I was able to resharpen the blade enough to keep going.

Mountain Fresh Plus is a good disease resistant hybrid that was developed here in NC that we grow as well. We've also got 6 varieties of peppers (mix of hot and bell/sweet), two varieties of tomatillos (one is purple), yellow squash, zucchini, corn, watermelons, cucumbers, beans and field peas (much of which we'll direct sow).Out potatoes, lettuce, carrots, and some of the cabbage and broccoli we started are doing well, but we've never had much luck with spinach. We'll have to try the Galilee variety you mentioned though! We've never tried Yacon, but we usually grow a good bit of sweet potatoes. Not sure how they compare. Goo…

谢谢!We've been using the lights in the article for about 7 years without any issues for vegetables. We do rotate/shuffle the trays around a bit as the seedlings on the edges will lean in a little. I use T5's in our shop and they are *considerably* brighter than the T8's they replaced, so I think we're going to replace these with the T5 fixture I mentioned above as well.

I didn't use a diffuser. I did test to get an idea of how far away from the lights the marquee needed to be so that the lighting looked consistent, but 2" was plenty. The marquee I used has a sticky back, so it covered the acrylic.

Why MDF? I've been using a similar but smaller MDF-topped workbench for 8 years and other than some scuffs in the polyurethane it's held up well. If you were going to mount a vise, certainly plywood with a hardwood edge would work well. This one is mostly for outfeed support and all my assembly / painting work. I'll be doing a Roubo-style bench with a leg vise for the hand-tool work shortly.MDF is also cheaper than decent plywood here. And using it with the T-molding with plywood doesn't work great since it usually isn't truely 3/4" and 1/2".Confused by the dressing ...The initial boiled linseed oil darkens the MDF a bit and provides a little protection. Some people only use BLO, but it takes several coats as the MDF sucks it up quite well. Polyurethane doesn't have adhesion issues applied over the dried BLO (you can see how it looks in the skateboard rack Instructable I made as well). Maybe if you are using a water-based polyurethane and apply it over the wet BLO.The last coat of BLO was because I went a little overboard with sanding the sheen down with the steel wool. It's just a super thin coat, but it actually hid the small scuffs in the polyurethane pretty well.

I should have taken a photo of that :). I'll see if I can get one later and add it. It's just so that the top can be level with the table saw top while allowing the miter gauge (and future sleds) to move as far as they need to. I could have made the bench top level with the bottom of the miter gauge so they would slide on top of it, but then the support is not quite as nice when ripping as there would have been a 1/2" or so height difference.
