Introduction: House Sparrow Bird Box Terrace

Based on a number of comments I've had from my USA readers please read this note before embarking on this project...

Supplies:

I also used an air staple gun to attach the shingles.

Having got the boards straight and flat I joined them using Kreg pocket screws, waterproof wood glue was also used.

With the 5 lengths cut I then added the angled cut to the top. The angle is 72.6º the same as the top edges. I used the mitre guide sliding table on the saw. My saw has a really handy 'yellow dot' on the saw bed, marked on this is the kerf of the blade, it makes it super easy to line up the corner to cut to.

I start by screwing the sides and dividers to the back, to do this I laid the back down and stood the dividers spaced out with the tops flush, with a sharp pencil mark onto the back where the dividers are. With a drill big enough for a clearance hole, drill three holes in the centre of your divider marking.
To make sure you don't split them you'll want to drill pilot holes in the divider.

Step 7: Adding the Roof

To enable me to clean out the box in winter time I decided to add the roof with a couple of hinges.

This is when I had a brainwave, 'I know what I'll do, I'll put cedar shingles on the roof'... This wasn't clever, it probably doubled the time of the build.

I had some strips of western red cedar left over from when I made a strip stand-up paddle board. I tried these on the roof, but they were too thick. I needed to thin these down. To do this I ran them through the table saw set at 5º.

The resulting strip was going to be very thin, so I needed to make a 5º zero clearance plate.
To cut the slot for the blade I clamped a piece of wood across the plate and raised the running blade through it.

Step 9: Cutting the Shingles

Step 10: Attaching the Shingles

Each row of shingles overlaps the previous row by about 5 mm (0.2"), these are offset by half a shingle to allow the rain to run off the rows.

Rawlplugs and #8 65 mm (2.56") stainless screws.

Here's hoping we get some nesting this year.

I hope this has inspired you to give your local birds a home.

I would point out that House sparrows (Passer domesticus)eat insects particularly when feeding young. In the UK they are one of the most common urban species but they are showing signs of decline in England.

It is worth thinking about hanging a short distance from the wall, with the help of a profile that will create space and allow the roof to open freely.

I think I will add a couple of battens to the back when I take it down in the winter, this will allow me to open the box without taking it off the wall.
I will have to do it later in the year because there are already 2 of the bird houses being used.

我不是批评你的贡献,但甲型肝炎e a concern if such houses were to proliferate (obviously would not happen on account of a tuturial :/.) There is a particular concern with birdhouses in the US on account of the habits of territorial birds - inviting them in may drive others out! House Sparrows are native (I believe) to the UK; they are newcomers to the Americas. Unfortunately, in the USA they outperform natives by flocking habits, heavy morphology, and aggressive behavior native birds. That is, they will invade nests and destroy the eggs and hatchlings. Those who attend birdboxes in wildlife sanctuaries will attest to the smashed remains of chicks and eggs. The problem here is that the USA is host to a migratory population that ranges Canada to South America, and this particular bird is stationary and harms a wide range of species.

Who would think that a template for a birdhouse would cause an international event?

They belong in the UK, and changes in building materials, and techniques, have drastically reduced the number of nesting sites. Introduced species always cause problems, the US grey squirrel has all but wiped out our local red squirrel. blame the idiots that introduced the species, not the species they introduced.

First, I will make the roof overhang the front of the house by 15-25mm. This allows some more rain protection for the interior of the house.

Second, I will drill some drainage holes in the bottom of each of the bays to allow moisture (wherever it comes from) to escape and prevent mold build-up.

I won't fault you for good intentions - ANY birds can be fun to watch. But house sparrows are actually allowed to be DESTROYED, and for good reason. It's difficult to believe our feathered friends can be evil - but those sparrows (not native to the U.S.) willfully KILL bluebirds - the GOOD, insect-eating birds! Perhaps your lovely design can be adapted for purple martins, another species valued for their ability to clean an area of mosquitoes. Please read
    http://www.daggerpress.com/2010/07/03/lets-get-thi...
And because many people will not have scrolled down to read the comments, the BEST thing would be to remove your project instructions entirely. Sorry! [P.S. We attract more than 20 species to our backyard feeders, but also have a trap to get rid of sparrows that persistently go after our bluebirds & swallows. We have a choice: nuisance bird, or birds helpful to the environment. It's a no-brainer.]
